I think of a piece of music in architectural terms: it is a building, with a function and a form.
It can be beautiful, or it can be ugly, but in any case it must stand. For that building to stand, it requires the presence of certain elements.
These essential elements make up the skeletal structure. Upon a solid structure, any number of disparate things may be incorporated to manipulate the
aesthetic quality of the piece. But without that structure, everything topples over.
